REPORTED SPEECH

Hello my dear students of 4º ESO:

Here you have the explanation of the Reported Speech to be able to do the activities 1, 2, 3 and 4 of page 153 of the Student's Book.

We use reported speech or indirect speech (estilo indirecto en español) to report what other person says.

The most typical activity for this aspect of grammar is to transform a sentence in Direct Speech to another in Reported Speech

Example

He said: “I work in a bank.” (Direct)
He said he worked in a bank. (Reported)

So, when changing a sentence from direct to reported speech we have to pay attention to which elements of the sentences can change:

- Tenses
- Pronouns
- Time and place expressions
- Type of sentence (affirmative, negative, interrogative, order or suggestion)

  • In the following links and images you have more information about the Reported Speech (in English and Spanish 😉)
