PAST PERFECT SIMPLE

Hello my dear students of 3º ESO!!!

Today we're going to see a tense that is already familiar to us: the Past Perfect Simple. Do you remember the Third Conditional, which we saw in the second term? Probably not, but when you read this explanation you'll remembe the Past Perfect Simple.

USE: The Past Perfct Simple has some uses, but today we're going to see one in particular.

We use the past perfect simple (had + past participle) to talk about time up to a certain point in the past.
Examples:
She'd published her first poem by the time she was eight.
We'd finished all the water before we were halfway up the mountain.
Had the parcel arrived when you called yesterday?
STRUCTURE:

*V3 IS THE PAST PARTICIPLE OF THE VERBS

Also, you have to keep in mind how we form the Past Participle of the verbs, (what goes after had).

  •  Regular verbs: we add -ed to the verb. Example: play-played
We have to be careful with the changes of some verbs when we add -ed.

  •  Irregular verbs: 3rd column of the list of irregular verbs which you have on pages 107 and 108 of your workbook.

Last, but not least, you need to remember that there are some time expressions that are used with the Past Perfect Simple:

*This is from the explanation of Past perfect Simple on your Workbook on page 105.

If you still have doubts about the Past Perfect Simple, in the following link you have an explanation in Spanish.

And that is all about the Past Perfect Simple for the moment. If you have any doubts, you can comment on this blog entry.
